HI THERE, I’M Kimberly
Something I tell my clients all the time is that
“Rebuilding after divorce happens step-by-step.”
This year’s Christmas tree showed me the perfect example.
When we pulled our tree out of the box, it was a mess — squished, uneven, and full of tangled branches. The “fluffing” is my least favorite part, but it’s the most essential. Without untangling what’s twisted and filling the gaps, the tree has no foundation to build on.
Divorce works the same way. Before anything can shine again, you have to sort through the mess, fill the empty spaces, and create a base strong enough to rebuild from.
When the fluffing was finally done, the tree stood bare, fuller but still nothing beautiful yet. No lights. No ornaments. No sparkle. Just branches and potential.
It reminds me of divorce recovery and rebuilding.
It was definitely not finished but it was clearly forming.
An Empty Tree — A Starting Point
A bare tree is simply waiting for what comes next.
After divorce, many people feel exposed, vulnerable and not sure of what comes next.
They are suddenly left without the routines and roles they once relied on. Even in that uncomfortable place, there is space for strength and new possibilities to take shape.
It’s not the end of the story. It’s the beginning of what comes next.
Lights — Little Glows
When we wrapped the first strand of lights around the tree, it didn’t look magical yet. One strand didn’t illuminate the whole room but the act of adding light is what mattered. Each strand added warmth, steadiness, and glow.
Healing from divorce works the same way. Slowly, everything began to feel brighter. Your light will come back and you will glow again.
Ornaments — The Adornment
If lights bring the tree to life, ornaments bring the meaning.
Over the years, our family’s ornaments have changed as our lives have changed. When I was married, we collected ornaments from trips and milestones. After my divorce, those became too painful to hang, so they stayed packed away. Later, we moved to a new house in the woods. Here, my kids and I decorated the tree with cute woodland creatures that matched our surroundings. A few years ago, we moved to the “Jersey Shore” and our tree is now filled with starfish, seashells, and sand dollars.
Different homes. Different seasons. Different stories. Still love.
Life after divorce works the same way:
New traditions New routines New values New memories
You get to decide what belongs in your life now while choosing what to leave behind.
The Tree Topper — The Crown
Our tree topper is a bright pink, feathered flamingo in honor of my mom. It is both whimsical and deeply meaningful. It’s the finishing touch that pulls the whole tree together and reminds us to look upward with hope yet reflect on memories of the past.
Your own “topper” in life is your vision for what comes next: the person you’re becoming, the way you want to feel, and the memories you carry with you.
Rebuilding Is Step-by-Step — and Can Create Something Beautiful
Watching my family decorate the tree, from bare branches, to lights, to ornaments, to the final topper all reminded me of rebuilding after divorce. You grow, you add, you shine… and you go step by step.
If you’re in your “empty tree” season, please remember:
You’re not behind. You’re becoming. And what you’re building can blossom into something beautiful, meaningful, and entirely your own.
