HI THERE, I’M Kimberly
I’m 56 years old, and I went to a Harry Styles concert (with my 20-year-old daughter).
For a few hours, I sang, smiled, and let myself be swept up in the energy of the people around me. I loved the music, of course. But what stayed with me afterward was the feeling in the room: strangers sharing something joyful, letting their guard down, and feeling connected without needing to know one another’s stories.
It made me think about divorce recovery.
When you’re going through a divorce, your world can get very small. So much of your time and energy goes toward decisions, logistics, difficult conversations, and worries about what comes next. Even when you’re surrounded by people, you can feel alone. It can seem as though everyone else is moving forward while you’re still trying to find your footing.
At the concert, no one knew what anyone else had been through to get there. The person beside me might have been celebrating something wonderful or taking a much-needed break from something painful. For those few hours, it didn’t matter. We could sing together anyway.
That kind of connection is easy to underestimate. It doesn’t solve the hard parts of divorce. But it can remind you that the hard parts are not the whole of your life. You can be carrying grief, uncertainty, or fear and still feel joy. You can be rebuilding and still have fun along the way.
I also found myself thinking about the influence one person can have on people they’ve never met. Harry Styles doesn’t know me, and I don’t know him. Yet the music and the atmosphere he creates brought thousands of strangers into a shared experience of openness and optimism. That feeling reaches beyond the concert itself. It reminds people that it’s okay to show up as they are, to enjoy themselves, and to feel part of something bigger.
There’s a lesson in that for life after divorce. The people who help us heal aren’t always the people we expect. A friend who checks in, someone who makes room for us in a new group, or even a stranger singing beside us can make the world feel a little less lonely. Connection doesn’t always begin with a deep conversation. Sometimes it begins with a smile and a song you both know.
I know how easy it is, especially after a major loss, to tell yourself you’ll do the fun things later. Once the paperwork is finished. Once you feel more confident. Once your life looks the way you thought it would. But joy doesn’t have to wait for everything to be settled.
Going to a concert at 56 reminded me that I still get to be curious, playful, and delighted. Divorce changed my life, but it didn’t take away my ability to connect with people or to be moved by a room full of strangers singing together. I’m grateful for the reminder.
If you’re finding your way through divorce or trying to build a life afterward, I hope you make room for experiences that bring you back to yourself. Go to the concert. Call the friend. Try the thing you’ve been putting off. You don’t have to feel completely ready. Sometimes the very thing you need is to step into a room and remember that there is still so much life waiting for you.
